ELEVEN

Downtown was small and quaint, and loaded with pedestrians. Wyatt parked on the street behind Damon and they took in unfamiliar vibe of the town. Charlotte had changed during the ride, pulling her blue sweater on to counteract her messy hair. She'd packed three pairs of shoes but no brush. She'd been out of sorts, obviously.

After pulling her fingers through the long black tangles, she brushed at the dirt patches on her black leggings and they made their way to the craft fair.

Living with the pack, Charlotte had become accustomed, if not immune, to the many handsome males. Tall, dark, and handsome weren't even fair descriptions when it came to most lupine men. They were sexy, strong, massive specimens. The women walking in the streets were struck like deer in headlights upon seeing Wyatt and Damon.

“You're going to get whiplash,” Charlotte murmured under her breath.

Damon seemed to notice, and offered smiles left and right. Wyatt appeared oblivious, however, and scowled and muttered about the people who kept stopping around them.

“If the lupine didn't hide, I'd bet they could be models,” Charlotte joked in a whisper.

Damon's grin grew mischievous, and Wyatt rolled his eyes.

“I don't think such a vain lifestyle would appeal to any loyal males,” he scoffed.

Before she could reply, a breeze caressed her cheek and filled her nostril with the scent of their mysterious lupine. She turned and followed it, taking Wyatt by the hand for support. Even though her heart pounded, she'd had enough of losing control. She couldn't transform in the middle of a crowd. There would be no glowing eyes in the midst of bad pottery and embroidered fanny packs.

“Easy,” Wyatt said. “Squeeze any harder and you'll dislocate my wrist.”

The joking tone distracted her for just a second, but it helped to soothe her nerves.

At the end of the market, one of the last stalls had several rows of paintings. In both watercolors and acrylics, there were nothing but wildlife images. Stopping next to a dark rendering of the night sky with a lush full moon, Charlotte sucked in a heavy breath.

A small woman came out from the stall's tent, a suspicious look on her face and tense stance. She saw Charlotte and her chestnut brown eyes widened. With long black hair falling over her shoulders and the same delicate height and build, the woman looked like she could have been Charlotte's older sister.

Mom?

The woman sprang forward with an anguished sob, wrapping her arms around Charlotte. A string of muffled words came between her breaths, but Charlotte couldn't understand any of it. She sensed Damon and Wyatt behind her, but couldn't turn to see them.

Though she stood stiff and frozen to the woman holding her, she could feel her walls breaking down.

“Mom,” she whispered, and squeezed the woman tight.

“I-Yeong,” she replied. “My little I-Yeong.”

Mija pulled away, holding Charlotte at arm's length and looking her over. Her hands tugged Charlotte's long, wild hair. “Oh, ipuda, my pretty girl.” She shook her head. “I always knew. In my heart, I knew you were alive.
